Reading at Manor Field Junior School

“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.”  (Malala Yousafzai)

The importance of reading at Manor Field - support for parents

At Manor Field Junior School, we are all readers. Our ‘Mocktail Bar’, where curiosity is shaken and stirred,  is the perfect space to snuggle up and get stuck into a really good book. The Mocktail Bar is open to children throughout the school day, including lunch and break time. Parents and carers are invited to visit The Mocktail Bar with their children to choose a brilliant book, both before and after school.  Miss Chapman leads reading in the school and is also always willing to recommend a good read.

Over the last few years, our reading experts have been compiling a list of ‘recommended reads’. Please click the link below to see the recommendations from some of the children in our school!

Supporting your child with reading

In the past year or so, we have a new vending machine in the Mocktail Bar!

The vending machine is filled with a variety of fiction and non-fiction books which celebrate diversity in line with our school's ethos. The machine is used to celebrate reading for pleasure across the school. Children receive special tokens for a variety of achievements, including a weekly reading raffle (for reading at least 5 times a week at home) and for reading 20 books. Those children who receive a token will be able to choose, and take home, a brand new book of their own to enjoy.

The machine itself has been purchased thanks to a kind donation from one of one of the school’s parents, Mrs Wojtasik, who raised the money through her charity work.

On occasions we take children to visit Waterstones book shop to celebrate when they win competitions linked to reading. We hold a couple of evening events throughout the year (Halloween Reading Event and 'Book at Bedtime!') to encourage reading for the whole family.
